Homes in Piedmont

Piedmont covers 1.7 square miles and is zoned almost entirely for single-family houses. The 1920s and 1930s saw a great deal of building, and many mansions of that era remain along Sea View Avenue and in upper Piedmont. Julia Morgan took commissions here, and so did Albert Farr, an architect known for Craftsman and Georgian houses who also designed the civic center.

Large houses of that period often run to three stories with a basement, plaster walls and sometimes a carriage house or garage apartment behind. Hillside lots tend to put a house well above or below the road, with terraced gardens around it. The city has very little commerce and relatively few apartment buildings or second units.

Piedmont incorporated in 1907 after residents narrowly voted against joining Oakland, which surrounds it. In the 1920s it was called the City of Millionaires, and many mansions of that era still stand.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Large old houses need many wired access points

Three floors, a basement and plaster walls are too much for any single router. We design a wired layout with several access points and a small rack, and fish cable without disturbing original finishes.

Detached buildings behind the main house need a link

A detached building at the rear of the lot seldom gets usable signal from the main house. We link it by buried cable or a wireless bridge and give it its own access point.

Coverage for gardens, gates and outdoor cameras

Cameras at the gate and music in the garden both depend on coverage outdoors. We place outdoor access points around the grounds and wire security cameras on the same cable plan.

Around Piedmont

  • Piedmont Park and the Exedra: Albert Farr designed the Exedra as a grand entrance to the park, and it was dedicated with Community Hall in 1925.
  • Piedmont Community Church: The church in the civic center was built in 1916 and is another of Albert Farr's designs.
  • Sea View Avenue: Many of the mansions built during the 1920s and 1930s still stand along this street in upper Piedmont.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Piedmont

How many access points does a three-story Piedmont house need?

It depends on the layout, but expect several. Three floors, a basement and plaster walls are too much for any single router. We design a wired layout with a small rack and fish cable without disturbing original finishes.

Can you bring Wi-Fi to a carriage house or garage apartment?

Yes. A detached building at the rear of the lot seldom gets usable signal from the main house. We link it by buried cable or a wireless bridge and give it its own access point, on the same network as the house.

Can cameras and Wi-Fi cover a terraced garden and front gate?

Yes, with equipment placed outdoors. Hillside lots tend to put the house well above or below the road, so indoor signal does not reach the gate. We place outdoor access points around the grounds and wire security cameras on the same cable plan.
