Homes in Calistoga

Calistoga's in-town housing is old and small in scale. Victorian cottages and early 1900s bungalows sit on the streets just off Lincoln Avenue, usually on raised foundations with a crawl space below and plaster walls inside. The city also has several mobile-home parks, among them Rancho de Calistoga, Chateau Calistoga, Calistoga Springs and Fairway Manor, where homes sit close together and older units often have metal siding.

Outside the grid the picture changes to vineyard properties and estates at the top of the Napa Valley: a main house, a guest cottage, a barn or winery building, and long distances between them. Both the 2017 Tubbs Fire and the 2020 Glass Fire forced evacuations here, so staying connected matters to people.

Sam Brannan opened his hot springs resort here in 1862 and named the town. The railroad reached Calistoga in 1868, making it the hub of the upper valley, and the city incorporated in 1886.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Plaster walls in the old cottages soak up signal

Plaster over wood lath weakens Wi-Fi more than modern drywall does. We use the crawl space to bring Cat6 up to wired access points in the rooms you use, with very little patching.

Metal siding on manufactured homes blocks Wi-Fi

Metal siding, common on older manufactured homes, keeps signal from reaching the porch or carport. We route cable under the home to an indoor access point and add an outdoor unit where you sit outside.

Guest houses and barns far from the router

On vineyard parcels the second building is often too far for any indoor Wi-Fi. We link it by buried cable, or by a point-to-point wireless bridge when trenching through vines or rock isn't practical.

  • Old Faithful Geyser of California: Known as Little Old Faithful, this geyser erupts from a well that was drilled in the late 19th century.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Calistoga

Will Wi-Fi work properly in a Calistoga cottage with plaster walls?

Yes, with wired access points. Plaster over wood lath weakens Wi-Fi more than drywall, so one router rarely covers the whole cottage. These homes usually have a crawl space, and we use it to bring Cat6 up to access points in the rooms you use, with little patching.

Why doesn't my router reach the porch of my manufactured home?

Usually because of the siding. Older manufactured homes often have metal siding, which keeps signal from reaching the porch or carport. We route cable under the home to a well-placed indoor access point and add an outdoor unit where you sit outside.

How do you get internet to a guest cottage or barn on a vineyard property?

With a physical link, not a stronger router. On vineyard parcels the second building is often too far for indoor Wi-Fi. We connect it by buried cable, or by a point-to-point wireless bridge when trenching through vines or rock isn't practical, then put an access point inside.
