Homes in Discovery Bay
Discovery Bay was dug out of Delta farmland. Excavation of the first bay, Lido Bay, began in 1968, lots went on sale in 1970, and by 1988 there were eighteen deep-water bays. The original town is a network of man-made waterways and residential islands, where houses generally back onto the water and have a private dock.
Waterfront homes here date from the 1970s onward, and houses in the area usually sit on slab foundations. The southeast part of the community wraps around the Discovery Bay Country Club golf course. Newer residential developments were added on former farmland to the north and west of the original town, and homes from recent decades often have wiring panels.
Planned from 1964 on the Byron Tract, former barley and potato fields, the community was first called Riverlake. Lots went on sale in October 1970, and the marina opened on July 4, 1981.
What that means for your Wi-Fi
Docks and boats sit beyond the house Wi-Fi
The dock can be a long way from the router, with an exterior wall between. We mount an outdoor access point facing the water so the dock and deck are covered.
Slab foundations on reclaimed land
Where there is no crawl space, cable goes through the attic and down the walls. For rooms with vaulted ceilings we use in-wall access points or a short exterior run in conduit.
Cameras and coverage for the water side
Many owners want a view of the dock and side yard. We wire cameras and outdoor access points back to a small rack, on the same UniFi system as the house network.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Discovery Bay
Can I get Wi-Fi on my dock in Discovery Bay?
Yes. The dock can be a long way from the router, with an exterior wall in between, so indoor signal seldom makes it. We mount an outdoor access point facing the water, wired back to the house, and it covers the dock and deck.
How do you run cable in a Discovery Bay house on a slab?
Through the attic and down the walls, where there is no crawl space. Rooms with vaulted ceilings have no attic above them, so for those we use in-wall access points or a short exterior run in conduit.
Can you add cameras that watch the dock and side yard?
Yes. We wire the cameras back to a small rack, alongside the outdoor access points, and everything runs on the same UniFi system as the house network. Because each camera is on a cable, it does not rely on Wi-Fi to stay connected.
