Homes in Gilroy

Gilroy has some of the oldest houses in the South County. Along Fifth Street and through the old core you find Victorians, Craftsman houses and bungalows, a few dating to the 1860s and many from around 1900. Houses of that age are typically wood-framed and raised over a crawl space, and often finished inside with lath and plaster.

The city grew fast from the 1970s, when it became a bedroom community for Silicon Valley, so much of Gilroy is tract housing from the last fifty years. Eagle Ridge is a gated golf course community in the foothills with homes from around 2000, and Glen Loma Ranch is a master-planned project of about 1,600 homes. The newest houses often come with a structured wiring panel.

The railroad reached Gilroy in 1869 and the city incorporated in 1870, which is why the old core is full of 19th-century buildings. From the 1970s it grew as a commuter town for Silicon Valley.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Lath and plaster in the Fifth Street houses

Wood lath and thick plaster cut signal down sharply between rooms. We fish Cat6 up from the crawl space or down from the attic and mount access points where the walls would otherwise win.

Wiring panels in the master-planned tracts

Many newer homes have a structured wiring panel in a closet or the garage with cables nobody ever connected. We test each run and build the network on the ones that pass.

Mesh kits struggle in two-story tract homes

A mesh kit that hops wirelessly between floors loses speed at every hop. We replace it with hardwired access points, one per floor, each fed and powered by its own cable.

Around Gilroy

  • Old City Hall: Built downtown in 1905, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
  • Christian Church on Fifth Street: Built in 1857, it is the oldest wood-framed church in continuous use in Santa Clara County.
  • Gilroy Gardens: The horticulture-themed family park opened in 2001 and is known for its Circus Trees and garden-inspired rides.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Gilroy

Why does my mesh kit slow down upstairs in a Gilroy tract home?

Because each wireless hop between floors costs speed. A mesh kit passes your traffic from unit to unit over the air, and a second story puts a floor in the way. We replace it with hardwired access points, usually one per floor, each fed and powered by its own cable.

What is the structured wiring panel in my newer Gilroy home for?

It is where the builder's data cables come together. The newest Gilroy houses often have one, with cables to the rooms that nobody ever connected. We test each run and build your network on the ones that pass, instead of pulling new cable everywhere.

Can you add wired access points to a Victorian near Fifth Street?

Usually, yes. Houses of that age are typically raised over a crawl space, and the lath and plaster inside cuts signal sharply between rooms. We fish Cat6 up from the crawl space or down from the attic, so access points sit where the walls would otherwise block the signal.
