Homes in Los Gatos

Los Gatos has four residential historic districts near downtown: Almond Grove, Broadway, Fairview Plaza and University-Edelen. Broadway was the town's first residential subdivision, Almond Grove the first and largest after incorporation, and about three quarters of the houses on Fairview Plaza predate 1900. These are wood-frame Victorians, cottages and Craftsman bungalows, typically with crawl spaces below and lath and plaster inside.

East of Highway 17, around Los Gatos Boulevard, the town is much more typically suburban, with shopping centers at the main intersections. Toward the Santa Cruz Mountains, houses often sit on steep, wooded lots and tend to spread over several levels.

Forbes Mill opened on Los Gatos Creek in the 1850s, the railroad arrived in 1878, and the town incorporated in 1887. The subdivisions laid out in the 1880s are today's historic districts.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Historic-district homes with lath and plaster

Plaster over wood lath weakens signal room by room, and nobody wants visible cable in a restored Victorian. We work from the crawl space and attic so the access points are the only thing you see.

Mountain houses stacked on three levels

On a steep lot the router usually sits on the street level while the bedrooms are a floor or two below. We wire an access point on every level so calls and streaming hold up throughout.

Decks and yards on wooded lots

Trees and terrain swallow whatever Wi-Fi leaks out of the house. We add outdoor access points for decks and patios, fed by cable, so coverage does not stop at the back door.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Los Gatos

Can you hide the cabling in an Almond Grove Victorian?

In most cases, yes. Homes in the historic districts typically have a crawl space below. We work from there and from the attic, so the cable stays out of sight and the access points are the only thing you see in the rooms.

Why is the signal weak on the lower floors of my hillside Los Gatos house?

Usually because the router sits at street level and the bedrooms are a floor or two below it. Houses toward the mountains tend to spread over several levels on steep lots. We wire an access point on every level so calls and streaming work on all of them.

Will an outdoor access point cover the deck on my wooded Los Gatos lot?

Yes, if it is placed for the deck and not for the whole hillside. Trees and terrain absorb what little Wi-Fi leaks out of the house. We mount outdoor access points fed by cable near the decks and patios you use, so coverage continues past the back door.
