Homes in Belmont

Belmont takes its name from an Italian phrase for beautiful mountain, and the terrain explains the housing. Trains began stopping here in 1864 and a depot followed in 1867. In the early years San Franciscans kept weekend cabins in the area, a settlement that came to be known as Shantytown.

Today it is a suburban residential community of single-family houses, with multi-story apartment and condominium buildings as well. The land rises into foothills and highlands around Waterdog Lake, and houses on sloping lots are often built on two or three levels to follow the grade, with decks or terraces in place of a flat yard.

Southern Pacific trains began stopping at Belmont in 1864, and banker William Ralston kept his country house here. The city incorporated in October 1926 and grew into a residential suburb.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Split-level hillside homes block signal between floors

When a house steps down a slope, the router ends up on one level and the bedrooms on another, with floors and framing in between. We wire an access point on each level so no floor depends on another.

Townhomes and condos share walls and airwaves

In attached homes, your neighbors' networks crowd the same channels as yours. We use wired access points at lower power and pick channels after checking what is already in the air around your unit.

Decks and terraced yards sit outside the walls

Hillside lots often put the outdoor space on decks and terraces above or below the house. An outdoor access point wired back to the main network covers them without leaning on signal leaking through a window.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Belmont

Why is the Wi-Fi weak downstairs in my Belmont hillside house?

Usually because the router is on one level and the rooms you use are on another. Houses here are often built on two or three levels to follow the grade, with floors and framing in between. We wire an access point on each level.

Will a mesh kit fix a Belmont split-level home?

It often helps less than people hope, because each wireless hop has to pass through a floor. We replace the hops with Cat6 to a hardwired access point on every level, so no floor depends on signal from another.

How do I get Wi-Fi on a deck or terrace below the house?

With an outdoor access point. Hillside lots often put the outdoor space on decks and terraces above or below the house, where indoor signal barely reaches. We wire an outdoor unit back to the main network so it covers them properly.
