Homes in Cotati

Cotati is the smallest incorporated city in Sonoma County, and its housing is a mix. The town began in the 1890s, when the Cotati Land Company cut the Page family ranch into parcels of five to twenty acres around a six-sided plaza. Older properties from that farm pattern often have deep lots, and some carry a second building at the back: a workshop, a barn or a small rental unit.

Most of the rest was built after incorporation in 1963, as the population grew more than fourfold by 2000. Housing from those decades is mostly tract houses of one or two stories, along with some townhomes and apartments with shared walls. Sonoma State University is about a mile east of the city limits.

A railroad stop called Page's Station grew up here after 1870. In the 1890s the Page family subdivided their ranch and Newton Smyth drew the six-sided plaza. Cotati incorporated in 1963.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Back-lot units and workshops need their own link

A cottage or shop at the rear of a deep lot rarely gets usable signal from the main house. We run buried cable to it, or set up a point-to-point bridge, and give it its own access point.

Shared walls mean crowded Wi-Fi channels

In townhomes and apartments, your neighbors' networks sit a few feet away. We place wired access points centrally, turn the power down, and pick channels so your network is not fighting the ones next door.

Two-story houses with the router downstairs

When the internet comes in at the garage, upstairs bedrooms get the leftovers. We run Cat6 up through the attic and mount a ceiling access point on each floor instead of relying on wireless mesh hops.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Cotati

How can I get internet to a back unit on a Cotati lot?

With its own link from the main house. A cottage or workshop at the rear of a deep lot rarely gets usable signal from the front. We run buried cable to it, or set up a point-to-point bridge, and give it its own access point.

Why does my Wi-Fi keep dropping in my Cotati townhome?

Usually because of the neighbors' networks. With shared walls, other routers sit a few feet from yours and crowd the same channels. We place wired access points centrally, turn the power down, and pick channels so your network is not competing with the ones next door.

Is a mesh kit enough for a two-story tract house?

Often not. When the internet comes in at the garage, a mesh kit has to relay over the air to reach upstairs, and speed drops with each hop. We run Cat6 up through the attic, where there is one, and mount a wired access point on each floor.
