Homes in Rohnert Park

Rohnert Park was built from scratch on a former seed farm, starting in the late 1950s. Paul Golis and Maurice Fredericks planned it as a set of neighborhoods, each around its own school, park and pool, and each known by a letter. A and B sections came first, and houses there are typically modest single-story tract homes on regular lots.

The lettered sections east of Highway 101 now run from A to M, plus R, S and W. Later ones tend to include more two-story plans, and the city also has condos and townhomes with shared walls. K section is the University District and W section is Willowglen. Newer homes like these are the likeliest to have network wiring already in the walls.

Development began in 1956 on the Rohnert family's seed farm, and the city incorporated in 1962, the county's first new town since 1905. Sonoma State moved to its permanent campus here in 1966.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Early tract houses often have a usable attic

In the older lettered sections, a low attic usually runs the length of the house. We use it to bring Cat6 to ceiling access points in the hallway and family room, rather than relying on a router in the garage.

Newer sections may already be wired

Homes in the University District and Willowglen may have a structured wiring panel. We test every run, reuse the good ones, and put access points on the cable that is already there.

Condos and townhomes share walls and airwaves

Dozens of neighboring networks compete in attached housing. We use in-wall or ceiling access points on wired runs, lower the transmit power and choose clean channels so your devices stay on your own network.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Rohnert Park

Where does the cable go in an older Rohnert Park tract house?

Usually through the attic. In the older lettered sections a low attic often runs the length of the house. We use it to bring Cat6 to ceiling access points in the hallway and family room, so you are not relying on a router in the garage.

Does my University District home already have Ethernet in the walls?

It may. Newer homes like those in K and W sections are the likeliest to have a structured wiring panel, but we never assume. We test every run, reuse the good ones, and put access points on the cable that is already there.

Why is my condo Wi-Fi slow when my plan is fast?

Often it is interference rather than your internet plan. In attached housing, dozens of neighboring networks compete for the same airwaves. We use in-wall or ceiling access points on wired runs, lower the transmit power and choose clean channels so your devices stay on your own network.
