Homes in Sebastopol
Sebastopol incorporated in 1902 and prospered for decades on Gravenstein apples, so the older houses in town date from the early twentieth century, Craftsman bungalows among them. Houses of that kind are usually wood-framed on raised foundations, often with small attics and plaster interior walls. The city adopted an urban growth boundary in the 1990s, so newer housing inside it is limited.
Outside the boundary the pattern changes. This is rural country that was once dominated by apple orchards, and houses often sit well back from the road. Many properties have a main house plus a barn, a studio or a second dwelling, sometimes a few hundred feet apart and screened by trees.
Sebastopol got its railroad connection in 1890, incorporated in 1902, and added an electric rail line in 1904 as the Gravenstein apple trade grew. The 1906 earthquake shook it harder than almost anywhere else.
What that means for your Wi-Fi
Older houses with short attics and tight crawl spaces
Older houses usually give us room to work, just not much of it. We run Cat6 under the floor or through the low attic, and use in-wall access points where a ceiling mount is not practical.
Studios and barns across an orchard
When the outbuilding is far from the house and trees block the view, we trench a cable where we can. Where there is a clear line of sight, a point-to-point bridge does the job.
Trees and distance defeat wireless mesh kits
Mesh nodes that relay over the air lose speed with every hop, and more so across a wooded country lot. We replace the hops with cable, so each access point gets a full connection.

- Laguna de Santa Rosa: The county's largest freshwater wetland, next to Sebastopol, is also the largest tributary of the Russian River.
- Florence Avenue: Nearly every front yard on this street displays a junk-art sculpture by residents Patrick Amiot and Brigitte Laurent.
Questions about Wi-Fi in Sebastopol
Is there room to run cable in an old Sebastopol bungalow?
Usually, though not much. Older houses here often have small attics and sit on raised foundations. We run Cat6 under the floor or through the low attic, and use in-wall access points where a ceiling mount is not practical.
How do I get Wi-Fi to a studio across my Sebastopol property?
By linking it to the house directly. When the studio or barn is far away and trees block the view, we trench a cable where we can. Where there is a clear line of sight, a point-to-point bridge does the job.
Why does my mesh system struggle on a wooded country lot?
Because each mesh node relays over the air and loses speed with every hop, and distance and trees make that worse. We replace the wireless hops with cable, so each access point gets a full connection back to the router.
