Homes in Dixon

Dixon grew outward from the railroad in rings, almost all of it between the tracks and Interstate 80. The streets near downtown have the oldest houses, and the earliest recorded subdivision, Dixon Acres, dates from 1922. Then came the postwar tracts: Dixon Homes in 1955 and the Stratford Manor units, built from 1959 into the 1970s.

The 1980s and 1990s were the busiest building years, with Dixon Glen starting in 1988. Valley Glen followed from 2003, and Homestead, a 600-acre project planned for about 1,200 homes, has been under construction since 2019. Most houses here are one or two stories, usually with an attic, and newer ones often come with structured wiring.

The first settlement, Silveyville, was founded in 1852. When the railroad passed it by in 1868, residents moved the town to the tracks on land Thomas Dickson gave for a depot, and Dixon incorporated in 1878.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Brand-new Homestead houses with a wiring panel

New homes here usually have Ethernet pulled to a panel, but nothing useful connected to it. We test the runs, add a small switch, and mount wired access points where the builder left cable.

1960s and 1970s tracts with a single cable outlet

Stratford Manor era houses were usually wired for one television, not a network. We use the attic to run Cat6 to ceiling access points, so coverage no longer depends on where the modem sits.

A shop or detached garage behind the house

Older lots near downtown and at the edge of town often have a shop or garage out back. We connect it with buried cable and add an access point inside for cameras and tools.

  • Dixon Methodist Church: The church at 209 North Jefferson Street dates from the 1871 move of the town from Silveyville to the railroad.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Dixon

My new Homestead house has Ethernet jacks. Why don't they do anything?

Usually because the cables end at a panel with nothing useful connected. New homes here often come with structured wiring that was never finished. We test the runs, add a small switch, and mount wired access points where the builder left cable.

Can you add network cabling to a 1960s Dixon tract house?

Usually, yes. Houses from the Stratford Manor era were usually wired for one television, not a network. Most houses here have an attic, and where it is accessible we use it to run Cat6 to ceiling access points, so coverage no longer depends on the modem's location.

Can I get Wi-Fi and cameras in the shop behind my house?

Yes. A shop or detached garage out back is usually beyond the reach of the router in the house. We connect it with buried cable and add an access point inside, which also gives security cameras and connected tools a solid link.
