Homes in Benicia

Benicia has two very different housing stocks. The Downtown Historic District around First Street takes in roughly 700 properties, about 300 of them historic structures from between 1847 and 1940. Many are Victorians, and houses of that age usually have plaster walls and raised foundations with crawl spaces. First Street itself runs down to the waterfront.

Much of the rest of the city is Southampton, in the hills above downtown, where single-family tracts and condominiums went up between about 1970 and 2000. Homes there are often two stories or split-level. On the east side, the former Arsenal now includes live-work spaces used by artists.

Founded in 1847 and incorporated in 1850, Benicia was the state capital for about a year in 1853 and 1854. The Army arsenal closed in the early 1960s, and suburban building took the population from about 7,000 in 1970 to 27,000 by 1995.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Plaster walls in the First Street Victorians

Old plaster and lath absorb Wi-Fi, and historic homes deserve careful work. We bring Cat6 up from the crawl space or down from the attic to wired access points, keeping visible changes small.

Split-level and two-story homes need wiring per level

Half-flights of stairs and a garage tucked under the house put floors and framing between you and the router. We wire an access point on each level and one outside for the deck.

Condos and live-work spaces with thick walls

Shared walls, and masonry in some older buildings, leave no easy cable path and plenty of interference. We use in-wall access points and short surface runs in conduit, then tune channels around the neighbors' networks.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Benicia

Can you wire a Victorian near First Street in Benicia without visible changes?

We keep them small. Houses of that age usually have plaster walls, which absorb Wi-Fi, and raised foundations with crawl spaces. Where there is access, we bring Cat6 up from the crawl space or down from the attic to wired access points, so little shows in the rooms.

Why does one floor of my Southampton house have poor Wi-Fi?

Usually because floors and framing sit between that level and the router. Homes in Southampton are often two stories or split-level. We wire an access point on each level, and add one outside if you want coverage on the deck.

Can you install access points in a Benicia condo or live-work space?

Yes, though the cable path takes planning. Shared walls, and masonry in some older buildings, leave no easy route and add interference. We use in-wall access points and short surface runs in conduit, then tune channels around your neighbors' networks.
