Homes in Castro Valley

Castro Valley was known for its chicken ranches in the 1940s and 1950s, and it has since become a bedroom community. Much of the housing is suburban and built after the ranches. Some lots are deep, with room for a second unit, a workshop or another house behind the first.

Greenridge, built along a ridge from 1960 to 1965, has about 185 Eichlers designed by Jones and Emmons and Claude Oakland. They have atriums, and Eichlers typically have glass walls, flat or low roofs and post-and-beam ceilings with no attic. Eichler had planned about 400 houses there before selling sections to other builders. Palomares Hills lies on the east side of the community, and the BART station opened in 1997.

Named for the ranchero Guillermo Castro, Castro Valley shifted from chicken ranches to a bedroom community. It has stayed unincorporated, with voters turning down cityhood in 1956 and again in 2002.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Greenridge Eichlers leave nowhere to hide cable

Eichlers typically have post-and-beam ceilings and glass walls, so there is no attic and few solid interior walls. We plan short exterior runs in conduit and use low-profile in-wall access points.

Rear houses and workshops beyond the router's reach

A rear house, ADU or workshop at the back of a lot is usually out of range. We connect it with buried cable, or a point-to-point bridge where digging up the driveway is not practical.

Hillside homes with the router on the wrong floor

Homes that step down a hillside tend to have the router on the top floor and the family room two levels below. We wire an access point for each level and the deck.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Castro Valley

Can you run cable in a Greenridge Eichler?

Yes, with some planning. Eichlers typically have post-and-beam ceilings and glass walls, so there is no attic and few solid interior walls to work in. We plan short exterior runs in conduit and use low-profile in-wall access points.

How do I get Wi-Fi to a second house at the back of my lot?

Run a proper link to it. A rear house, ADU or workshop at the back of a deep lot is usually out of range. We connect it with buried cable, or a point-to-point bridge where digging up the driveway is not practical.

Why is the family room downstairs a dead spot in my Castro Valley hillside home?

Homes that step down a hillside tend to have the router on the top floor and the family room two levels below, which is too far for one box. We wire an access point for each level and one for the deck.
