Homes in El Granada

El Granada was drawn before it was built. The Ocean Shore Railroad commissioned Daniel Burnham to design it as a seaside resort, and he gave it an unusual layout of concentric curving streets instead of a grid. Financial trouble and the rise of the automobile ended the railroad's plan, and the place became a residential community instead.

Today about 5,500 people live here, and roughly three quarters of the homes are owner-occupied. Pillar Point Harbor sits at the community's southwest edge, with Princeton-by-the-Sea to the west, Moss Beach to the north and Half Moon Bay to the south. Houses on sloping streets are often built on more than one level, and homes near the water tend to take the worst of the fog and salt air.

The Ocean Shore Railroad commissioned Daniel Burnham to lay out Granada as a resort for San Franciscans, and the post office recorded the name as El Granada in 1909. The railroad failed, leaving a residential community.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

Floor plans that differ from house to house

Floor plans here tend to differ from house to house, and some have no usable attic. We survey each one, then combine attic runs, crawl space runs and in-wall access points as the structure allows.

Hillside view homes on two or three levels

A view house on two or three levels needs an access point on each. We wire them back to one switch so phones and laptops roam between floors without dropping calls.

Harbor air is rough on outdoor hardware

Fog and salt air tend to reach well inland from the harbor. For decks and yards we use outdoor-rated access points with sealed connections, mounted under cover where possible and wired rather than meshed.

Around El Granada

  • Pillar Point Harbor: The harbor at El Granada's southwest edge was built between 1959 and 1982 and serves recreational and commercial fishing boats.

Questions about Wi-Fi in El Granada

How do you plan cable routes in an El Granada house?

House by house. Floor plans here tend to differ from one home to the next, and some have no usable attic. We survey each one, then combine attic runs, crawl space runs and in-wall access points as the structure allows.

Why do calls drop when I change floors in my El Granada home?

Houses on sloping streets are often built on more than one level, and one router rarely serves them all. We put an access point on each level and wire them back to one switch, so phones and laptops roam between floors.

Can I have outdoor Wi-Fi near Pillar Point Harbor without it rusting?

Yes, with the right hardware. Homes near the water tend to take the worst of the fog and salt air. For decks and yards we use outdoor-rated access points with sealed connections, mounted under cover where possible and wired rather than meshed.
