Homes in Montara

Montara is a small coastal community of about 2,800 people. It got its start when the Ocean Shore Railroad built a hotel next to its station in 1905, but the railroad went bankrupt in 1920 and early development stayed limited. It never became a tract suburb, and house ages and styles tend to vary from one lot to the next.

About four in five homes are owner-occupied. Montara Mountain rises behind the community, so some lots slope, and houses on them are often built on more than one level. Fog and salt spray are common near the water. The Tom Lantos Tunnels, opened in 2013, replaced the dangerous Devil's Slide route.

The Ocean Shore Railroad reached Montara in 1905 and built a hotel beside its station, but went bankrupt in 1920. Highway 1 replaced the old Pedro Mountain Road in 1937, following the railroad's route.

What that means for your Wi-Fi

No standard floor plan to work from

Without a standard tract plan to go by, some homes have attics and crawl spaces and others have neither. We check what the structure offers first, then choose between ceiling access points and in-wall units with exterior conduit.

Ocean-view houses on more than one level

When the living room is upstairs for the view and the modem is downstairs, coverage suffers. We wire an access point on each floor so both levels get full speed.

Salt spray reaches cameras and outdoor access points

Near the ocean, exposed metal corrodes quickly. We pick outdoor-rated equipment, seal every connection, and route cable so water cannot follow it into the house.

Around Montara

  • Point Montara Light: The station was established in 1875 as a fog signal, and its cast-iron tower was first built in Massachusetts in 1881.
  • Montara State Beach: The beach is a stretch of sand nearly a mile long, hazardous for swimming but popular with experienced surfers.
  • Montara Mountain: The peak behind the community rises to 1,898 feet and is reached by a gravel fire road.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Montara

Does my Montara house have somewhere to run Ethernet?

It depends on the house. Without a standard tract plan to go by, some homes have attics and crawl spaces and others have neither. We check what the structure offers first, then choose between ceiling access points and in-wall units with exterior conduit.

Why is Wi-Fi poor upstairs when my modem is downstairs?

When the living room is upstairs for the view and the modem is downstairs, the signal has to pass through the floor. In Montara houses built on more than one level, we wire an access point on each floor.

Will cameras and outdoor access points survive Montara's salt spray?

They can, with care. Near the ocean, exposed metal corrodes quickly, and fog and salt spray are common near the water. We pick outdoor-rated equipment, seal every connection, and route cable so water cannot follow it into the house.
