Homes in Napa
Napa has some of the oldest housing in the North Bay. The Napa Abajo and Fuller Park district near downtown holds about 600 buildings, most from before the end of World War I: Victorians and later bungalows, usually with plaster-and-lath walls, raised foundations and tall attics. Alta Heights, on the steep east side of the river, mixes small early houses with homes from the 1930s through the 1960s.
North and west of the center the city is mostly postwar. Bel Aire and Westwood were built in the 1950s on former fields and orchards, Linda Vista is mid-century tract housing, and Browns Valley reaches into the hills on the western edge, with mid-century ranch homes and newer custom builds. Houses from those years are often single-story, usually with low attics and attached garages.
Nathan Coombs laid out Napa in 1847 and it incorporated in 1872, growing first as a river town. The postwar decades added tract neighborhoods such as Bel Aire and Westwood, and a magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the city in 2014.
What that means for your Wi-Fi
Plaster and lath in the downtown Victorians
Thick plaster, tall ceilings and several small rooms break up Wi-Fi quickly. We fish Cat6 through the attic and crawl space to ceiling access points, so the plaster and trim stay untouched.
Ranch houses with the modem at one end
In the 1950s tracts the service usually enters at the garage, and the far bedrooms suffer. We run cable across the attic to access points in the middle and far end of the house.
Hillside lots in Alta Heights and Browns Valley
Homes stepped up a slope end up with one good floor and a weak one, plus a deck that gets nothing. We wire an access point on each level and add an outdoor unit.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Napa
Can you run Ethernet in a Fuller Park Victorian without damaging the plaster?
Usually, yes. Homes in Napa Abajo and Fuller Park usually have raised foundations and tall attics, which give us routes above and below the rooms. We fish Cat6 through those spaces to ceiling access points, so the plaster and trim are left alone wherever possible.
Why are the back bedrooms slow in my 1950s Napa ranch house?
Most likely because the service enters at the garage and the router sits at that end. In the 1950s tracts the far bedrooms are a long way down the house. We run cable across the attic, where there is one, to access points in the middle and far end.
What does a Wi-Fi install involve for a hillside home in Alta Heights?
A free two-minute online estimate comes first, followed by a visit or call to plan the layout. Homes stepped up a slope tend to have one good floor and one weak one, so we wire an access point on each level and add an outdoor unit for the deck.
