Homes in Sonoma
Sonoma's housing starts at the plaza and gets newer as you move away from it. Eleven one and two-story adobes from the Spanish and Mexican period still stand around or near the square. Mixed among them are buildings in the styles popular between 1835 and 1945: Classical Revival, Italianate, Eastlake, Queen Anne and bungalow. Adobe walls are thick, and the wood-framed houses of the Victorian years usually have plaster inside.
Farther out, the housing is generally later. Beyond the city limits, Sonoma Valley is vineyard country, where a single property often includes a main house, a guest house and farm or winery buildings, sometimes with a pool and patios in between.
Mission San Francisco Solano was founded here in 1823, and Mariano Vallejo laid out the pueblo and its plaza in 1835. American settlers raised the Bear Flag in 1846, and the city incorporated in 1883.
What that means for your Wi-Fi
Adobe and thick masonry walls stop Wi-Fi
Thick earthen walls block signal almost completely, and you cannot fish cable through them. We put a wired access point in each main room and run the cable through the attic or in neat conduit.
Historic houses where the trim has to stay
In a Queen Anne or Italianate near the plaza, we avoid cutting visible plaster. Cable goes through the crawl space and closets, and access points go on ceilings where they are least noticed.
Guest houses and winery buildings on valley parcels
We connect each building with buried cable or a point-to-point wireless bridge, then add outdoor access points so the network holds across patios, pool areas and the path between buildings.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Sonoma
Can you get Wi-Fi through adobe walls in Sonoma?
Not through them, so we go around. Thick earthen walls block signal almost completely, and cable cannot be fished through them. We put a wired access point in each main room and run the cable through the attic, where there is one, or in neat conduit.
Will installing Wi-Fi damage the plaster in my historic house?
We plan the work to avoid it. In an older house near the plaza, we stay away from cutting visible plaster. Cable usually goes through the crawl space and closets, and access points go on ceilings where they are least noticed.
How do I cover a guest house and pool in Sonoma Valley?
Connect each building, then cover the space between. We link the guest house with buried cable or a point-to-point wireless bridge, and add outdoor access points so the network holds across patios, the pool area and the path between buildings.
