Homes in Sausalito
Sausalito takes in both steep, wooded hillside and shoreline tidal flats, and the housing follows the ground. On the slopes, houses often sit on several levels, with the street on one side and the bay on the other, and many are older homes that have been added to over time. The city fits about 4,400 housing units into a small area, so neighbors are usually close.
Floating homes are the other housing type. After the wartime Marinship yard closed, returning soldiers and artists built dwellings from leftover lifeboats and scrap. By the late 1970s five permanent marinas had been established for licensed floating homes with utility and sewer connections. More than 400 houseboats of all shapes and sizes now line the north end of town.
William Richardson held Rancho del Sausalito from 1838, the railroad made the town a ferry terminus in the 1870s, and it incorporated in 1893. The wartime Marinship yard brought thousands of workers and, afterwards, the houseboats.
What that means for your Wi-Fi
Floating homes need gear that suits the water
Rooms afloat are often compact, and salt air is hard on equipment. We use compact in-wall access points inside and weather-rated units on deck, with cable runs kept short and sealed.
Houses stacked four levels down a hillside
The street door may be on the top floor with the living space far below. We wire an access point for each level, routing Cat6 through closets and the under-floor spaces between them.
Decks and terraces facing the bay
Outdoor rooms on a hillside sit beyond the exterior wall, where indoor signal fades. We add outdoor access points so the deck gets the same network as the living room, without a wireless repeater in between.

- Viña del Mar Park: The downtown park at Bridgeway and El Portal has a fountain and two elephant statues that trace back to the 1915 Panama-Pacific exposition.
- Waldo Point Harbor: One of the houseboat communities at the north end of town, which together count more than 400 houseboats.
Questions about Wi-Fi in Sausalito
What kind of Wi-Fi setup works on a Sausalito floating home?
One built for small rooms and salt air. Rooms afloat are often compact, and equipment on deck weathers quickly. We use compact in-wall access points inside and weather-rated units outside, with cable runs kept short and sealed.
Why can't the router at my street door reach the rooms below?
Because on a hillside the street door may be on the top floor, with the living space several levels down. Each floor in between weakens the signal. We wire an access point for every level, routing Cat6 through closets and the spaces under the floors.
Can you put Wi-Fi on a hillside deck facing the bay?
Yes. A deck or terrace sits beyond the exterior wall, where indoor signal fades. We add an outdoor access point so the deck is on the same network as the living room, wired directly rather than fed by a wireless repeater.
