Homes in Glen Ellen
Glen Ellen is a village of roughly 700 people on Sonoma Creek, near where Calabazas Creek joins it. It grew as a resort stop once the railroad arrived in 1881, with hotels near the depot and a mineral springs resort of 30 cottages. Much of the housing is still small in scale. Older cottages are typically wood-framed, some sit close to the creeks, and houses on the slopes are often built on more than one level.
The 2017 Nuns fire burned through the village and destroyed more than 50 homes along Warm Springs Road and O'Donnell Lane, and by 2020 half of the 20 houses lost on O'Donnell Lane had been rebuilt. Rural properties outside the village often have guest cottages, barns and long driveways.
Charles Stuart named his vineyard Glen Ellen for his wife in the late 1860s. The railroad arrived in 1881 and hotels followed, and Jack London lived on his Beauty Ranch here until his death in 1916.
What that means for your Wi-Fi
Small cottages with no room for cable runs
Some creekside cottages have low crawl spaces and vaulted or flat ceilings. Where we cannot get above or below, we run short lengths of exterior conduit and use in-wall access points.
Hillside houses lose signal between levels
A router on the entry level seldom covers the floor below or the deck beyond it. We wire an access point on each level and put an outdoor unit where you sit outside.
Guest cottages and gates down a long driveway
We link a guest cottage or barn to the main house with buried cable or a point-to-point bridge, and can add a security camera at the gate on the same network.

Questions about Wi-Fi in Glen Ellen
Can you wire a small Glen Ellen cottage with no attic?
Yes. Some cottages here have low crawl spaces and vaulted or flat ceilings, which leaves little room for cable. Where we cannot get above or below, we run short lengths of exterior conduit and use in-wall access points.
Why does the lower level of my hillside house have no Wi-Fi?
Because one router rarely reaches through a floor. Houses on the slopes are often built on more than one level, and the entry level gets all the signal. We wire an access point on each level and put an outdoor unit where you sit outside.
How can I get internet to a guest cottage in Glen Ellen?
Link it to the main house. We connect a guest cottage or barn with buried cable, or a point-to-point bridge when trenching is not practical. We can also add a security camera at the gate on the same network.
